New Location and a return to the beginning

 Well, things can sometimes move incredibly quickly at times.  Within a week of posting my last blog post, where I mentioned we were looking at downsizing, we were accepting the keys for a new property.  We have moved from a three bedroom house  into a two bedroom apartment, which suits my wife and her medical needs much better.  But, it does mean that I have lost the gaming and painting room, at least until eldest son decides to move out.  Fortunately, the painting station, figure cases and boxes of terrain have all managed to find a home in the main bedroom until they can move to their permanent home.

On the subject of painting, this weekend I picked up the brush for the first time in over a month to carry on painting some French Line and Light infantry.  After this I only have a couple more infantry bases to go then I have fourteen cavalry bases and six artillery bases to do to complete the Army of the South.  I am hoping to get them all done before the end of the year provided I can get back into a decent rhythm of painting.

All this upheaval means that the opportunities for actually getting a game going will be very much reduced for the foreseeable future.  Unless I start to use the bed as a table for the base for the boards all it will mean doing is evicting the cats from their favourite sleeping spot and not being able to leave it setup over night (unless I can convince Helen to sleep on the sofa :) )

So, what is going to be next, I will have to dig out the notes I made on the ECW games I played earlier this year and get them written up.  I really should get some photos taken of the French force that are building up nicely and get them posted before the end of the year.

2020 Recap and 2021 plans

 Well, 2020 is finally over and it is time to have a look back at the plans I wrote at the end of 2019 and to see how they worked out. Let me start with the easiest one to look at, my show list.  Basically, I made it to Hammerhead in March and that proved to be the only one that went ahead that I had planned to go to.  One good thing about that though was that my spend on figures and terrain is right down this year, especially with Baccus only opening for short periods.  So, what are the plans for 2021 well that is mainly going to be decided by what happens with COVID and the vaccine rollout, but as Hammerhead has already been pushed back until July I am figuring on going to mainly the shows in the second half of the year, which in addition to the rearranged Hammerhead show I will try to get to Joy of Six, Claymore, Fiasco, Border Reiver and Battleground shows, provided they go ahead that is. Dismounted Infantry and Vapnartak 2019

The week leading up to Vapnartak was a bit of a busy one, but I managed to get the Dragoons finished and as a bonus I got the Kings Lifeguard done as well.  My hunt for Royalist dragoon guidons was a little less successful though, I have painted the regiment as James Usshers Regiment of Dragoons and the only guidon I could find that might relate to the regiment belonged to Colonel Henry Washington who took command after James Ussher was killed.  So, I am just going to paint a basic plain guidon in black. I am fairly happy with the way they turned out, including the guidon.  The only problem was that there was not enough room on the base for the horse holder and horses, I will put these onto a separate 30mm x 30mm base and place them on the table when they are needed. Next up were the Lifeguard which were straightforward, though I decided to vary them from my previous foot regiments by painting the pikemen as being armoured rather than with just a buff coat.  The standards I got f

The Dark Ages of 2022 Report, or, Mind what you do with that arrow, you will have someone's eye out

 So, with the Greeks and the Persians in the bag it was time to travel nearly one thousand five hundred years into the future to the year 1066.  I decided that the 40mm bases were a  little too  small to use, so I returned to using 60 by 30 millimetre bases. The first army to hit the painting table were the Anglo-Saxons, the figures from Baccus painted up nicely and I added some flags from Maverick Models which made them look good.  Having just two ranks of twelve figures on each base and two bases per unit makes the shieldwall look quite good.  After finishing them off I decided to have a bash at some buildings and another stab at getting thatch right. I was a bit happier with the way the thatch worked out on this batch of buildings and I think I can see a way of making it better still.
